Wildlife Shields
It is the story of all life that is holy and good to tell, and of us two-leggeds sharing in it with the four-leggeds and the wings of the air and all green things; for these are children of one mother and their father is one Spirit. Black Elk 1863-1950
During my first tropical snorkeling experience, I was blown away by the designs swimming around me- an indelible spark struck instigating the Wildlife series. The abstract patterns and textures on convex wall shields bow to Nature’s ingenious design constantly evolving for each unique environment. Starting with patterns on dinner plates, this series was made to grow. (Early Works)
Motivated, I became a certified diver in the Puget Sound, dove in tropical seas and climbed the North Cascade peaks to learn from our diverse environments and extraordinary life. A shield is defined as a person or thing providing protection from harm and also heralds honor of and sense of family and here, species. The convex wall Shields offer a lens, an eye into wonder and the genius with which we share this planet.
The Wildlife work is a celebration and honoring of life in the spirit of the Oglala Sioux Holy Man.
